Transformer (2018)

Running Time: 1hr 18mins

Transformer is a powerful documentary that gives viewers an inside look into the challenges faced by a world record-holding male weightlifter, Matt “Kroc” Kroczaleski, as he transitions into his true female self, Janae Marie Kroczaleski. In just about every possible way, Matt was what most of us would refer to as the ultimate “man’s man." In addition to his muscular physique and his career as a competitive powerlifter and bodybuilder, Matt also served his country as a former United States Marine. On top of that, he had already conquered one of the most difficult battles a man could face when he defeated testicular cancer.

To say the least, Matt was the pride of his parents, his children, and his community. That is, of course, until someone took it upon himself to publicly out Matt as being transgender. For so many people, coming out is the hardest part, but for Janae, that didn’t seem to be the case. The film shows how Matt embraced the changes in his life in an admirable way and celebrated his true sense of identity as he introduced Janae to the world. Needless to say, the criticism began and the endorsements ended.

As the film progresses, we see Janae’s courageous and conflicted battle to just be herself. We watch as her mother meets Janae for the first time, while his father warns Matt to keep his feminine self at a distance. We see the struggle Janae faces as she continues to train and maintain her muscularity and strength, while also dealing with the struggle of losing weight in an effort to appear more slender and stereotypically feminine. We watch as Janae dedicates a lot of her time focused on her outward appearance…the perfect outfit, make-up, and hairstyle, just wanting to be comfortable in her own skin.

The admirable, non-judgmental, beautiful love displayed by Matt’s three sons really stood out in the film. Whether it was when Matt was playing around with his sons in a pool, encouraging them as they worked out together, or when they were spending time together outdoors boating and cliff jumping, you could see how much these boys loved, admired, and respected their father. The same was also true when Janae was applying her make-up and getting ready for a fun night out on the town. She chatted with her boys as they ate pizza and played video games, totally unfazed by their father’s transformation. So many people in this world teach their children to hate and judge other people who are different than them, hoping to carry on their own beliefs and messages of discrimination. Those people could learn a lot from Janae as a father. It’s clear that she chose to teach her children love, tolerance, and respect. That lesson can be further exemplified by her sons, three outstanding young men who just simply want their father to be happy and accept her for exactly who she is.

Although forced to come out publicly, Janae was relentless and determined as she transitioned into the female that she always knew she was. I’d imagine that was the heaviest weight she ever had to actually lift. And in my opinion, whether male or female, the strongest beings are actually known for their inner strength. I would Absolutely recommend watching this documentary.
